What is Participatory Budgeting?
Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process where community members decide how to spend part of a public budget. It started in 1989 as an anti-poverty measure in Brazil and has since spread to hundreds of cities worldwide, informing budgets for cities, housing authorities, schools, and other institutions.
In 2021, Boston residents voted to approve a ballot measure to create an Office of Participatory Budgeting, and the program is now in its second year in the city. Through partnerships with community organizations, collaboration with City Departments, and guidance from an External Oversight Board (EOB), the Office of Participatory Budgeting hosts yearly cycles to allow for continuous public engagement.
The Turkish American Cultural Society of New England (TACS) is taking part in this project to give a voice to our members and friends in the use of this $2 million budget of the City of Boston.
We encourage you to share this opportunity with your friends and neighbors who might be interested in making a difference in Boston. Your ideas can help shape our communities!
